University of Manitoba, Robson Hall, Faculty of Law - Assistant Professor

Robson Hall, Faculty of Law invites applications for up to 4 tenure-track Faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor. Positions will be filled on a rolling basis with a review of applications commencing August 1, 2018 and positions available from January 1, 2019 onwards. No specific area of scholarship is listed and the candidate should be willing to teach mandatory areas on the JD degree (e.g., Contract, Tort, Property, Trusts, Criminal Law, Public Law, Legal Systems, Corporations, etc.).

Robson Hall is undergoing an extraordinary period of curriculum redevelopment with a focus on teaching innovation, research excellence and experiential learning opportunities for professional practice. The University of Manitoba prides itself as amongst the oldest law faculties, offering a university degree since 1884. It is home to three research centres: the Legal Research Institute, the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Centre for Human Rights Research and has peer-reviewed academic publications, including the Asper Review of International Business and Trade Law, the Canadian Journal of Human Rights, the Manitoba Law Journal and Nuclear Non-Proliferation in International Law (Springer-Asser Press). The Faculty has endowed chairs: the Asper Chair in International Business and Trade Law and the Marcel A. Desautels Chair in Private Enterprise and the Law, and has recently been endowed with a chair in Human Rights and Social Justice. Based in Winnipeg, Robson Hall is a vibrant and rich work environment where Faculty members provide external leadership in a variety of organizations such as the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, the Law Reform Commission, various non-government organizations, as well as a wide range of professional bodies and scholarly organizations. The Faculty offers a JD and a Research LLM and has recently approved a new inter-disciplinary Master of Human Rights (MHR). The Faculty is proud of the achievements of its alumni who contribute to the legal profession and a wide range of business and public service, nationally and internationally, including a judge on the International Criminal Court.

Duties and Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and committed researcher and educator, with a developing research profile who will provide academic leadership in developing mandatory JD courses through teaching innovation and research excellence in terms of originality, impact and academic rigour.

Applicants for the position will:

  • hold a JD (or equivalent) and a doctorate in law or be near to completion;

  • have experience and an excellent record of high quality teaching in law subjects;

  • contribute to at least two of the mandatory areas in the JD degree;

  • have experience and proven track record of, or potential for, quality research and publishing in a law subject as demonstrated in publications in peer-reviewed journals or other refereed fora or peer-edited equivalents;

  • have a record of, or demonstrated potential for, supervising research students;

  • be an independent worker with experience in managing teaching, research and administrative duties;

  • demonstrate they can work as part of a team within a collegial environment;

  • have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work in a diverse environment;

  • have excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing;

  • be expected to contribute to all aspects of the academic life of the Faculty and University;

  • have excellent presentation skills in communicating with a variety of people, including students, colleagues and external stakeholders.

 

OBA Foundation fellowships in legal ethics and professionalism

The OBA Foundation has issued a call for applications for the OBA Foundation Chief Justice of Ontario Fellowships in Legal Ethics and Professionalism.

The OBA Foundation is now accepting applications for each of these two Fellowships for the 2019-2020 year.  The deadline for applications is July 2, 2019.

  • $15,000 will be paid to the recipient of the OBA Foundation Chief Justice of Ontario Fellowship in Legal Ethics and Professionalism Research.  This Fellowship is open to full-time faculty teaching at a Canadian university or college.
  • $5,000 will be paid to the recipient of the OBA Foundation Chief Justice of Ontario Fellowship in Legal Ethics and Professionalism Studies.  This Fellowship is open to OBA members who are not full-time faculty teaching at a Canadian university or college.
